Art in the Good Life- Dance and Lights

Art. Art is subjective. Art is culture; and, art is emotion. Art sparks the imagination and is completely unpredictable. The good life, in the same sense, is much similar to art. The good life is subjective to each individual and is unpredictable. When art is viewed however, one cannot help but relate to the art itself. Art brings out a heightened sense of perception in individuals and an engager for the sentiments.

I went to a dance showcase at Santa Fe College. I myself used to dance- particularly in high school. I arrived roughly five minutes before the show started. I could not help but scoff at myself for sitting in the audience, for I regularly was on the stage. The lights diminished to a blackout and the show was about to commence. I was waiting in anticipation, then, a light flashes on to a dancer. The dance had begun; the dance was jazzy and sharp. I had automatically become jovial in expression. I was recollecting memories from when I had danced. The jazz song was about women who can be sharp and strong, where the women had complete control over their paths.

The next song that came on was a modern song that included a duet between two women. There seemed to be a story that I had not understood. I peeked my head towards the audience around me. The audience’s faces seemed to have a story of their own. Each individual audience member seemed to be creating their own individual story. Dance, a form of art, shapes imaginations and stories. Each extension of the leg, each pirouette, and each contraction shapes a story. The beauty of dance and art lies in the fact that they can be subjective to each individual person.

As the show continued, I found myself taken away to a new world. I was lost, but I was lost in to a story realm. The good life is very much like art. Individuals go about creating stories of life, molding and shaping the life to one’s personal perspective. The good life also has its simplicities and complexities, yet at the same time, the good life can be both nebulous and comprehensible. Art is important for the reasons that it can both separate an individual from the realities of life and connect an individual to the realities of life- and the options are subjective.
